What is an LCR Meter?

An LCR meter measures the inductance (L), capacitance (C) and resistance (R) of electronic components, along with impedance and phase angle, at a selectable test frequency. Unlike a multimeter's resistance function — which only applies a fixed DC test at one condition — an LCR meter can sweep frequency, voltage and current to characterise how a component actually behaves in the circuit it will be used in.

Why this matters: A capacitor or inductor's real-world characteristics change with frequency. Testing only at DC or a single fixed condition can miss defects or mischaracterise a component's true performance in its intended application.

What is the difference between an LCR meter and a multimeter's resistance function?

A multimeter applies a fixed DC test at one condition and gives a single resistance reading. An LCR meter can sweep test frequency, voltage and current, and measures inductance and capacitance in addition to resistance — necessary for accurately characterising how a real component behaves in an AC circuit.

Why does test frequency matter for LCR measurement?

A component's effective impedance changes with frequency due to internal parasitic effects. Testing at the wrong frequency can give a misleading picture of how the component will actually perform in its intended circuit. The IM3536's DC to 8MHz range lets you test at the frequency relevant to the application.

What is DC bias testing and why would I need it?

Many components — particularly ceramic capacitors and inductors — change their electrical characteristics when a DC voltage or current is applied, similar to their actual operating condition. Do I need to buy a test fixture or probe separately?

Yes. The IM3536 does not include a test fixture or probe — you select the one appropriate to your component type and connection method. We stock the L2000 (4-terminal Kelvin lead, for precise measurement of leaded components) and L2001 (pincher probe, for quick clip-on testing).

What is the difference between the L2000 and L2001 accessories?

The L2000 is a 4-terminal (Kelvin) test lead that separates current and voltage sensing for the most accurate low-impedance measurements. The L2001 is a simpler pincher/clip probe for quickly testing axial and radial leaded components. Choose L2000 for precision work, L2001 for faster general-purpose testing.

Can the IM3536 test surface-mount (SMD) components?
