Benchtop LCR meters for testing capacitors, inductors, resistors and other electronic components.

An LCR meter measures the inductance (L), capacitance (C) and resistance (R) of electronic components, along with impedance and phase angle, at a selectable test frequency. Unlike a multimeter's resistance function β which only applies a fixed DC test at one condition β an LCR meter can sweep frequency, voltage and current to characterise how a component actually behaves in the circuit it will be used in.
Why this matters: A capacitor or inductor's real-world characteristics change with frequency. Testing only at DC or a single fixed condition can miss defects or mischaracterise a component's true performance in its intended application.
Key advantage: Precise, repeatable component testing is essential for R&D validation, incoming inspection, and production-line pass/fail sorting β catching defective components before they reach a finished product.
The Hioki IM3536 is a general-purpose benchtop LCR meter trusted from R&D labs to production lines:
Test components across the frequency range they will actually operate in, from low-frequency inductive devices to capacitors characterised at MHz frequencies.
Guaranteed accuracy range from 1mΞ© to 200MΞ©, with high repeatability suited to low-ESR electrolytic capacitor testing and power supply coil impedance evaluation.
Measure inductors and capacitors under bias conditions that simulate real circuit use, or in accordance with industry test standards.
Perform sequential measurements under different conditions automatically β for example, L-Q measurement at 1kHz followed immediately by DC resistance, without manually reconfiguring between tests.
USB, LAN, GP-IB and RS-232C interfaces as standard, with bundled software for exporting frequency-sweep data directly to Excel β built for integration into automated test systems.
A general-purpose benchtop LCR meter suited to both R&D and production environments:
| Model | Accuracy | Best For | Frequency Range | Impedance Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IM3536 | Β±0.05% | R&D component characterisation and production-line testing | DC, 4Hz-8MHz | 1mΞ©-200MΞ© |
Precision component testing supports these use cases:
Fast pass/fail sorting of capacitors, inductors and resistors on the production line using comparator (Hi/IN/Lo) judgement, with results output for automated handling systems.
Verify that incoming batches of passive components meet specification before they enter your production process, catching defective or out-of-tolerance parts early.
High repeatability at the relevant test frequency makes the IM3536 well suited to measuring the equivalent series resistance of electrolytic capacitors, a key indicator of capacitor health and performance.
Characterise power inductors up to 8MHz, evaluating impedance and Q factor across the frequency range relevant to switching power supply design.
Analyse coils, transformers and other wound devices during product design, including resonance point analysis by sweeping frequency.
Evaluate voltage- and frequency-dependent component behaviour during filter design and characterisation work.
